Sun beds provide a convenient and controlled way of stimulating vitamin D production. If you work in an office or you prefer privacy, sun beds enable you to stimulate vitamin D production as an alternative to natural sunlight. As with natural sunlight exposure, it is very important that you do not burn when using sun beds.

Our staff at Bronze Tanning Centre are trained to advise you regarding tanning times and also provide you with a skin analysis. This enables you to get enough exposure to tan (if you want to get a tan) and obtain enough UV to help produce vitamin D.

Vitamin D and your Diet

Most multivitamins do not contain enough vitamin D to provide you with the recommended daily dose. Vitamin D supplements are available.

Who is at risk from Vitamin D Deficiency?

Age - The older you are the harder it is for your body to produce vitamin D.

Lifestyle - Spending time indoors during the day.

Location - The Uk is located within the northern hemisphere which means longer winters and less sunlight strength. All this reduces the opportunity to produce vitamin D in the winter.

Race - Asian and Afro Caribbean people who have very dark skin find if more difficult to produce vitamin D.

Culture - Cultures that require the wearing of full face, long sleeved and full length clothing.

Pre-existing illness - Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis and other intestinal diseases prevent the absorption of vitamin D obtained via the diet or supplement.

Studies have shown that vitamin D has benefits in relation to:

  • Cellular health - breasts, colon and prostrate cancers.
  • Bone health - Osteoporosis. Osteomalacia and hip fracture.
  • Organ health- High blood pressure, hypertension and heart disease.
  • Mental Health- Including SAD, depression and general mood.
  • Autoimmune Diseases- Multiple Sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Skin disorders - including psoriasis

Ultra Violet Light Exposure

A regular, unprotected, moderate amount of ultra violet light (UV) exposure is necessary for good health. Research has shown that regular unprotected exposure increases production of vitamin D, which can help lower the risk of diseases such as colon, breast, prostrate and ovarian cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and depression.
